__________ the french trader antoine leguere apparently was given the name Penichon by the Indians, and made schieftan of the members of Wabasha's band who did not move(see first and second links above).the Fils de penichon then was his son by antoine's marriage to Wabashaw's daughter or sister.

Hermin1, I've heard of Pennichon called Wapasha. It leads to,quite a bit of confusion especially when what the white men called them is included. Red Leaf and so on. My question is: Are Wapasha and Pennishon the same chief ?

No, they are not the same person. Penichon was a mixed blood. chief Wapasha left the area with some of his band, and the remaining members elected Penichon their chief.
I also forgot thank you for posting the very interesting reference. Welcome to our website. Are you related to the person who posted a request for information re. Montgomer Pike,Jr? I would recommend you contact Him/her by personal Message and compare notes. ____ addendum: Wapahasha was a mived blood also, but he was half chippewa and half mdewakanton.

I have seen many branches descending from the daughters of "Brown Eyes," or Susan Pennichon Graham, adopted daughter of Wabasha II (?), after his brother in-law was killed by rival indians. Including the Fredette family, they're in Faribault, MN. It was an interesting name because John Dillinger's girlfriend, was a Metin and named Billie Frechette. No relation, though. Susan Pennichon Graham was the mixed-blooded wife of Duncan Graham. One of her daughters was Jane, she was Philip Wells' mother. Susan's been referred to as "The Grey Hukleberry, Woman." I think she was Santee and Ojibwe. Do you have any more info. about Susan's sister? Vicky, best regards, sincerely Jed Pike, aka utzer0n113?

utzeron: where did you get the information re. Susan Pennichon Graham? when was her father killed by those Indians? ______ Okay, now I think I understand. it was Jean (correction, it was Antoine)Pennichon the French trader who married a daughter of chief Wabasha.it was her sister 's husband that was killed, and so she adopted her niece as her own daughter(susan Pennichon) ?
We have no information on the sister who married charles Jacques Frenier, unfortunately. but there is i believe a tree of the Freniers on our website either in Family Trees or "To ask for Help On A person. there may be information on Oyate web site also re. the Freniers. ______________ chief pennishon(sp.) had the following daughters: the one who married Chas. Jacques Frenier Tahanpawastwin(Mary St. Clair) who married Old Betsy's brother Lightning Maker Ellen Pinichon Faribault(aka Big Yellow woman). Ref. Old Betsy, the Life and Times of A Famous Dakota Woman and Her Family. Mark Diedrich.Prairie Smoke Press.1996, and 2006 or 2007.

I about fell out of my chair when I read my posting on Pennichon above. His son chief "Good roads" was once married to "Old Betsy", according to the historians.

The info. I read was from the preface of a five part series written by Thomas F. O'Dell for the No. Dakota Historical Society in 1948. It references Susan Graham, Philip Faribault Wells' grandmother. It's titled "96 Years Among The Indians." It is a good read about settlers and their relation to the Indians and how the Great Sioux Reservation was formed with the U.S. Gov't. It's about 250-60 pages and I've only managed to find the beginning and end, as a PDF file from the library. Am working on getting the other half, the middle, and should have it in a week or two. It has Philip Wells at Ft. Yates So. Dakota pictured with Gall, Crawler, Crow King, Running Antelope, Rain-in-the-Face, Bruigier, Louie Sitting Bull, Al Parkhurst, Chatka Agard, Chase Walking, Yellow Hawk, Fool Bear and Brave Thunder. I'll PM this stuff to you as soon as I get a chance.
Hermin1, I took out that link to the Philip F. Wells photo. It was really poor quaility, will try getting a better quality photo at add the link to it. The link you posted for the Woodards was GREEAT! What a perfect copy!
Yours, utzer0n113 Sincerely, J. M. Pike

i will have to read that journal of Zebulon's(addition; part that I downloaded)
to see if he gave the first name of that Robinson who was with his expedition. there are at least 2 Robinsons who figure in on Santee genealogy trees: Thomas Robinson(mixed blood white) and son of Dennis robinson(Scotch-irish) who married Mary Jane Wakute(daughter of chief Wakute)and then he married Mary Moran. Thomas Robinson( full blood Sioux) who married Mary Victoria Farazier(dau. of Cetan Wicakte and a Sarah Robinson(or sophia Wabasha). their daughter married a relative of my friend here in Sioux city. At the telusplanet website, I also noted a Robinson(white man) who was a trader in Minnesota Teritory area.

utzer: I sent her all I was able to find on him, which was very little. He signed a contract to work for a trading company. I sent her a copy of the contract.I am trying to find the file it was in.My sis helped me rearrange my appartment a while back and I amstill trying to find some stuff. hahaha In the 1780's he was trading on the Riviere St. pierre(Minnesota River), out of Mackinac and Prairie du Chien. he and Joseph Renville were trading partners for a while. He married Winona oldest daughter of chief "He who Fears Nothing" @ 1749-60.( I don't remember the approximate date, it is in one of my files on the Freniers. In 1830-1831 he was the interpreter at the White River Post in what is now South Dakota.(ref. page 235. South Dakota Historical Collection: Vol. 9. 1918. You can download this volume free from the net.it also mentions his son Francoise and thereis a lett3er from Francoise in there also). That is all I have been able to find on him other than the information on his descendents. I have been searching for information on him for the past 5-6 years. what information is Hopstismiley trying to find that I haven't found for her already? ____________________ Update: I found the misplaced file I was looking for. One of the people at the genforum found the original contract, translated it and sent the translation to me. the link is below: img832.imageshack.us/img832/7972/charlesjfreniercontract.jpg

Oh, that is of some help... Prairie Du Chien is where Duncan Graham wound-up. She's looking closer at her ancestor Winona, which I guess there isn't much info on. I just wanted to put my new Ancestory.com membership to some good use. Hoptismiley is trying to find the connection between Charles Jacques Frenier's wife Winona, which I found may mean "first born" in the Lakota language. The preview of the "Spirit Car" book, is a seriously read. Thank you for the info. on 'Old Betsey' and Mark Dietrich (Sp?) - there is much useful historical information there. Had "Old Betsey, The History Of A Famous Dakota Woman And Her Family" for a little while, found it as an interesting back-drop to the events surrounding the Little Crow outbreak of 1862. But "Spirit Car" was even better... you almost felt as though you were transported back in time as these events, the 1862 -64 Indian War were taking place. Dietrich portrayed more the stuggles and fortunate connections that Ellen St. Clair aka "Ol Betz" had in St. Paul Minnesota. When the very existence of your extended family is threatened, how they all pulled together and helped one another out of a, - what must have been a terrible reality for many families that were separated from their homeland and larger groups of kin and had to struggle to survive as isolated families of fewer than two dozen adults. How their families pulled together during family hardships of the 1840s-1880s. I'm posting a photo of three of the Graham sisters I found on Face Book. You've got to go to where I saved the picture, on the Internet since I don't have a permanent personal computer to work from... yet. files.myopera.com/Utzer0n13/blog/4721_94761786089_583251089_2442112_5585456_n.jpg] You have been helpful with my search for John Booher and Abigail nee Martin Booher, but I will research Ancestory.com more to insure the accuracy of any census or other documents I find, before I upload anything to you. Update: Not a lot of research has been done. Up-side am generating new - hopefully - good leads. I will see if there is any research I can do on Ancestory.com with the dates and places you have provided about Charles Freniere. GenRoots on Ancestry does seem good... but it's veery time consuming. Found a Mack family GenRoots or Web or whatever site through Ancestory.com that had a lot of promising trees, but they were disconnected at the point at which I would really like to see where the branch continues. Before Susan (Istagwin) but only list the daughers and one son Alexander Graham and who they married. It stops there! It confirms my info. that Wabasha and Powatan had blood going back to the Virginia Algonquin chiefs. But much more research must be done before my "theory" can be proven. On one thing I have gotten a bit of support about is... that Istagwin (Susan, adopted dau of the Penichon's) Chief Wabasha's daughter that married G. Penichon adopted Susan, Istagwin, from a sister that I can find no record of. Susan's g grandau, Elizabeth L. nee Boisson - McLaughlin says that her g grandmother was a full blooded Indian. G. Penichon was French. I don't think that he and Wabasha's Dau actually had any children of their own? Wabasha's dau is referred to as only Red Leaf's dau or Dau of Red Leaf. Anyway? so, the theory goes. Good Luck, thanks again Hermin1. Sincerely, utzer0n113 aka Jed
